For those brave enough to venture into the world of electronics, this is a new resource. There are some great tips on modding your equipment, how to create analog summing boxes, and a master list of transformers. They offer both online instructions with which you can find your own parts or small kits for under a $100. Totally worth your time because with a little bit of effort and a few months...

Thank You, Vintage King
The box arrived the day after I ordered it from vintageking.com There was a debate over whether to get the API 3124+ or API lunchbox+4 512c. But this cost less in the long run and has a better track record than the modules. There is a difference in sound but really it’s a preference. I just wanted 4 channels of API audio in a rack. When you buy brand new, it feels good. No...

Kick ass record
I was really into Poison the Well during high school. They had a lot of influence on the music I was making but after Derek Miller left the band I sort of lost interest. The next few records weren’t awful yet they weren’t really my thing. So a few years later I check out a video called ‘infinity guitars’ and loved it. Totally stripped down music with guitars, vocals, and...

Singing Animal Pragmatism, Part III
Ran some tracks through the 1176LN and the Aural Exciter which is surprisingly awesome. Thanks for the tip Tape-Op. 1176 is great for making things musically louder but is not the most subtle compressor. Although acoustic guitar fucking shines through this thing when it is recorded right.

First full band client
I am in the first stages of production with my first full band client as a freelance engineer. Ideally, since they are from Michigan, we should be video-chatting at some point this week to talk about aesthetic. Apparently I am in the mood to make lists Things you should have decided before you even begin recording: 1-Input list: what instrument, what microphone, and what input This should be...

MP3 was an okay format when our hard-drives could hold less than 300-Gigabytes. Additionally, clients are usually fine with mp3s if that is the medium with which they release their music. The logic follows. However, if you are creating a CD Master for duplication with mp3 files where is the logic in that? Fatvonfree made an excellent point about listening to compressed audio information....

monitors and losing
mp3s like to take a shit all over my monitors or rather my monitors take a shit all over mp3s. There is this insentient buzzing with the mid-high range. First reaction, as always, ‘what the fuck? did I break these?’ Second thought, play the full bandwidth copy of Tomboy by Panda Bear HOLYCRAP. Hiss gone, that album sounds amazing, burn all mp3s. -end scene-

After almost 4 years, I am moving back to my hometown 40 minutes south of Chicago. From this the poor soul reasons: Moneys. Fat stacks of cash flow that I do not have. Anyways I am in the process of setting up a room at my old house. It looks like this: Yum. So next 5 days at dedicated to making this place not suck because my last apartment ended with the said ‘suck.’ On...

music(s)
I really feel like now is the time to find more current music than I will ever know what to do with. However, I do feel like a lot of music is in it’s infancy stages because the artists mainly multi-track. Which can deliver some great performances, even if they are incredibly staggered and edited. I’m probably just becoming an old bastard and want to join the musical conversation...

Chicago Music scene in 2011
chiboulevards: John at Gonzo Chicago put the finishing touches on this awesome video recap of this year in independent music around Chicago called “Chicago 2011: Why We Love Our Live Music Scene”. If you get a chance, check it out. It features mostly punk and garage acts playing some spots around Logan Square, including video footage from the now defunct Mopery. Some language may be NSFW…    ...

Pure Data
I’ve been working on a visual patch with GEM in Pure Data for the last two weeks. As I was working on using a 16 pad controller to augment some objects the GEM window crashed. And keeps crashing. I’ve been debugging for an hour now until finally opening a new patch window, create a quick object, and… GEM kept crashing. SO: Good News I am not writing shitty code. Bad News ...

long shot. Does anyone know of any reasonable lofts/larger 1 bedrooms to rent in Chicago? Or at the very least areas that don’t suck. The dog and I are now looking for a place to live.
